Samples of My Work for the Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling
Statements of Excellence for Admission to Graduate School in Rehabilitation Counseling
Sample 1st Paragraph for the Master's, MA in Rehabilitation Counseling
Still only 27, I am quickly becoming an expert in the area of Rehabilitation since I am a former member of the Armed Forces who is transitioning back to civilian life at the same time that I continue to struggle with several interrelated and service-related conditions that resulted from my deployment. I am optimistic that these disabilities will be temporary, and that I can overcome them in the fullest sense by completing an MA in Rehabilitation Counseling, learning to help others at the same time that I help myself. My greatest societal contribution would be to first begin my career as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with the Department of Veterans Affairs, working directly with veterans, helping them to obtain an education, acquire vocational skills, and secure employment.

Heroines of Rehabilitation Counseling
Rehabilitation counseling is a fine job. There are many women involved in this calling. Here are some we admire.
Ruth A. Fanning
Ruth Fanning is Director at Vocational Rehabilitation Services, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. She was selected as the Director of Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) Service in August 2007.
In this capacity, Fanning provides executive level oversight of the comprehensive rehabilitation services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Benefits Administration.
As Director, she oversees the administration of the VR&E program nationwide for veterans with service-connected disabilities and service members awaiting medical discharge from the Department of Defense.
VR&E program services include vocational evaluation, rehabilitation counseling, training, and employment services necessary for veterans to achieve their employment goals and objectives.
Additionally, the program offers assistance that enables veterans to achieve maximum independence in daily living activities, so each veteran can obtain and sustain suitable employment. VR&E serves more than one hundred thousand disabled veterans annually.
Prior to her appointment as the VR&E Service Director, Fanning worked in the Cleveland V A Regional Office as the Assistant Director and Acting Director. In those roles, Fanning worked with Cleveland's management team to ensure quality and timely services to Ohio's 1.1 million veterans. The services provided included the adjudication of compensation claims for disabled veterans and VR&E services.
The office also served as a Regional Loan Center, responsible to administer VA's home loan program and Specially Adapted Housing grant program for six state, and provided special missions through three unique units: the Tiger Team, the Resource Center, and the Virtual Information Center.
Prior to working in Cleveland. Fanning was the VR&E Officer at one of the largest Regional Offices in the country, the St. Petersburg VA Regional Office. While in St. Petersburg, she led the VR&E division to become a top performing office, leading the nation by rehabilitating over 700 veterans in fiscal year 2005.
Prior to becoming the VR&E Officer, Fanning was the Assistant VR&E Officer and a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor at the St. Petersburg Regional Office.
Before beginning her VA career, she worked in the private sector rehabilitation field and mental health field. Fanning has an MA degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of South Florida and is a certified Rehabilitation Counselor and Certified Vocational Evaluator with over 27 years of experience in the counseling and rehabilitation fields.
