Strategic Design and Management Master’s Degree Sample

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." - Eleanor Roosevelt.

I am an entrepreneur, designer, and brand development consultant who is passionate about creativity, community, and commerce. Particularly, I love creating things that cultivate a sense of confidence in others. Above all, I consider myself to be a dreamer with a vision. My dream is to become a successful serial impact entrepreneur who is able to drive positive change on a global scale. My vision in accomplishing that dream is also my biggest motivation for applying for the Strategic Design and Management graduate program. Since finishing my undergraduate studies, I have gone from experiencing both successes and failures as an entrepreneur and designer, having started three separate companies of my own and consulting other entrepreneurs on how to effectively develop their brands. In just eight years, I have witnessed how it's no longer “business as usual”. In a world that increasingly demands better-designed objects, communication, systems, and organizations to meet social needs, I believe my professional goals of becoming a future game changer and innovation pioneer in the new economy and having the ability to create my own trajectory while also making the world a better place can only be achieved through receiving an education from an world class institution whose values and mission I share.

I aim to develop a high level of mastery in the areas of strategy, innovation, and design thinking methodologies in order to learn how to apply a design-driven, systems-oriented approach to recognizing and developing business opportunities that are financially sustainable, address unmet social needs, and have the potential for scalable impact. During my studies, I hope to excel in my coursework with thoughtful curiosity, maintaining an open mind and always learning from my mistakes. Understanding that a large percentage of students in the program are international, I believe I can add to the richness and diversity of the cohort through my personal experiences growing up as a less fortunate first generation Vietnamese-American raised in the inner city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. My culturally diverse upbringing helps me to connect with others with ease. With parents too poor to afford schooling past the 9th grade in their homeland of Vietnam, they managed to carve out their very own slice of the American Dream through hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit. In this way, I have developed a unique lens in which I see the world, society, and especially American culture.

Having traveled to Vietnam as a teenager for the second time, I met relatives I never knew I had. During our time together, I learned of how it was growing up for them. Having only two outfits each, one for church on Sundays, and the other for the rest of the week. The fact that my own relatives on the other side of the world, made less than a dollar a day working at the very same factories that made the products I coveted so much as an American teenager really had a profound impact on me. I felt troubled realizing the vast importance placed by young people in America on brand names and having the latest Jordans, myself included. This realization would force me into a deep reflection of and fascination on the relationship between brands and culture. This reflection and fascination would only mature over the years and lead me to begin my entrepreneurial journey by motivating me to pursue my childhood dream of one day having my own successful brand.

I believe that this program will not only be a career enhancing as well as a potential career changing opportunity, but a life changing opportunity for me. If accepted to Parsons, I will put what I learn to use in the best way possible, helping new generations of creative and motivated people to become entrepreneurs and successful at doing what they are passionate about, leveraging the power of creativity for the stimulation of commerce. My long-term goals include increasing levels of independence, evolving into a successful serial impact entrepreneur, then eventually a mentor and coach, advising/teaching other entrepreneurs.

Reflecting back on my undergraduate career at WVU, I realize that lack of focus due to having several jobs to help pay for my expensive out of state tuition while my father was sick, ultimately resulted in academic achievement not being my top priority and regret not getting more out of education. At the same time, after having the opportunity to interact with several faculty members and current students of the Transdisciplinary Design program as well as the Strategic Design and Management program, and being able to sit in on several classes from each program, I realize the type of academic environment I need in order to thrive. Rather than being another face lost in a crowd of several hundred students each class, I needed a more intimate environment where I could learn with my hands and by doing. Which is why I believe that I learned more about the world, life, and most of all myself in the years following my undergraduate career during my entrepreneurial journey. I have since found focus and direction after starting my first business and have continued to develop this focus into what I believe is my life’s calling. To use design and entrepreneurship to solve problems facing our future and drive positive social change on a global scale.

Therefore, I sincerely thank you for your considering my application for graduate studies at Parsons based on my true potential and not that of a period of time which I truly believe does not honestly reflect my academic potential.

I would be honored by the opportunity to help you with your Personal Statement or Statement of Purpose for graduate or advanced professional study in business. Statements of Excellence for Graduate School in Management

Sample 1st Paragraph for the Master’s Degree in International Public Management at the XXXX School of International Affairs, Korean Applicant, Program in France

I am a student from Korea, still 22, and I recently finished my undergraduate studies in History. I feel strongly that studying history has helped me to better appreciate the opportunities and responsibility involved in being a public servant, especially in the complex arena of international relations, law, and management. Your program in International Public Management at the XXXX School is my first choice for graduate study because I want to return to France, and because I see your program as the most thoroughgoing and creative curriculum available to prepare students for a lifetime of service in the public arena. I lived in France for one semester as an exchange student and this helped me to bring my French up to a professional level and to maintain it since. This is another reason why I am convinced that I can excel in your program.

Business as Human Salvation: The Personal Statement of Purpose for Business School.

At the center of my own interest in business stands the concept of ‘socially responsible’ business practices. Over the course of the last 15 years or so that I have been dedicated full time to drafting personal statements or statements of purpose for admission to programs of advanced study, the importance of business, particularly large corporations, assuming responsibility for their actions and actively promoting community responsibility, even progressive social advancement, has become widely recognized. This is now the new mainstream line of thinking in the business world: what is good for the community, in short, is also good for business.

As a result, if I were to help you with your statement for admission to a business program, I would do everything that I could to portray you as someone who would be a highly responsible member of the business community, someone who is highly sensitive to social issues and the importance of the business community giving something back to the broader society.

The Heroines of Management

In the USA and a few other countries there is around a 50 percent chance of your boss being a woman. In Jamaica, it´s 59.3%; in Saint Lucia, 52.3%; and in Colombia, it´s 53.1%. We´re here to celebrate some marvelous women. Many of them are CEOs, or just kick-ass business women who know how to rock the world of management.

Debra A. Cafaro

Debra Cafaro is the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Ventas, Inc. The company is an S&P 500 firm with an enterprise value of $37 billion. It owns 1,300 healthcare and senior living properties in North America and the United Kingdom.

Under Cafaro’s leadership, which begun in 1999, Ventas’s market capitalization rose to $26 billion from $200 million. The Company’s compound annual total shareholder return (TSR) has exceeded 27% since January 1st, 2000.

In 2016, Forbes named Cafaro as one of the 100 “World’s Most Powerful Women,” the Harvard Business Review recognized her as one of the top 50 “Best-Performing CEOs in the World” (3d consecutive year). Modern Healthcare listed her as one of the “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” (3d time) and Real Estate Forum identified her as one of “The 70 Elite” real estate executives who shaped the industry for the past 70 years. Wow!

She was also named by GlobeSt.com as one of nine “Game-Changers” in commercial real estate, and by Crain’s Chicago Business as one of the “Most Powerful Women in Business”.

CNBC Mad Money host Jim Cramer listed Cafaro as one of the “Bankable 21” CEOs in Get Rich Carefully and she was voted to Institutional Investor’s 2015, 2014, 2012 and 2011 “All American Executive Team”. She was selected as one of the “Top 50 Women in World Business” by the Financial Times.

Cafaro serves on the Executive Committee of the Boards of the Real Estate Roundtable and the Economic Club of Chicago, but she´s also a member of the Boards of University of Chicago, Chicago Infrastructure Trust, Executives’ Club of Chicago, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and World Business Chicago.

In 2010, Cafaro served as Chair of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT), where she was honored with NAREIT’s Industry Leadership Award.

She served on the Board of Directors of the Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE: WY) from 2007-2016 and is a member of the Business Council and the Legal Services Corporation’s Leadership Council.

Prior to joining Ventas, Cafaro was President and a Director of Ambassador Apartments, Inc. She practiced law for 13 years following her 1982-83 judicial clerkship with the Hon. J. Dickson Phillips, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Cafaro received her J.D. cum laude in 1982 from the University of Chicago Law School, where she was named its Distinguished Alumna in 2011. Her B.A. magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1979. She has two children. We´re not sure how she fits it all in.

Sheryl Sandberg

Whilst Facebook was certainly very popular before she joined the company in 2008, it was difficult to see how the site would make an income worthy of its valuation.

Not only did Sandberg help meet those expectations, she helped massively exceed them. Since she came on board as Facebook’s number two, its user base increased more than 10 times to roughly 11% of the world’s population. The business is on course to post massive profits that are rumored to cause the company to be valued near the $100 billion mark, almost as much as half the GDP of Ireland. It was her task to monetize Facebook, and she did this very well.

Susan Wojcicki

Susan Wojcicki can certainly claim to be one of the most influential women in business owing to her being Senior Vice President at search engine giant Google, Susan has been responsible for helping to turn a great idea into a very profitable one. Susan is mostly in charge of the advertising revenue side of Google, and she is a great leader.

Indra Nooyi

Born in Calcutta, India, Indra Nooyi is one of the most powerful women in business. She’s held executive positions in many of the world’s top companies.

Nooyi is currently Chairwoman and CEO of Pepsico, the second largest food and drink company on the planet. She has not only excelled in business but also in academia, earning degrees in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. She also has an MBA in management in her native India. She then went on to earn a Master’s degree in Public and Private Management at Yale.

Cher Wang

Wang is perhaps arguably the most successful female entrepreneur in the world. Her wealth is primarily of her own making (rather than resulting from working for a large firm or being born wealthy). She spent many years manufacturing cell phones for other people which earned her a tidy fortune.

It wasn’t until she set-up her own company, HTC, that her wealth really took off. She has an estimated worth of $6.8 billion. Her HTC smartphones quickly gained notoriety and in 2010, accounted for 20% of the smartphone market.

You may not have heard of Wang, but she’s undoubtedly influential. Her income is entirely down to her own wits rather than any other factor. She´s a truly impressive woman.

Mary T. Barra

Barra is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors Company. She was elected Chairman of the GM Board of Directors in January, 2016, and has served as CEO of GM since January, 2014.

Under Barra’s leadership, GM is focused on strengthening its core business of building great cars, trucks and crossovers. It´s also working to lead the transformation of personal mobility through advanced technologies such as connectivity, electrification, autonomous driving and car sharing.

Barra has also established a strategic direction based on putting the customer at the center of everything the company does around the world.

Prior to being named CEO, Barra was Executive Vice President, Global Product Development, Purchasing & Supply Chain from August 2013, and Senior Vice President, Global Product Development from February 2011.

In these roles, she was responsible for the design, engineering, program management and quality of GM vehicles globally.

Before that, Barra served as GM Vice President, Global Human Resources; Vice President, Global Manufacturing Engineering; Plant Manager, Detroit Hamtramck Assembly; Executive Director of Competitive Operations Engineering; and in several engineering and staff positions.

In 1990, she graduated with a Master’s in Business Administration from the Stanford Graduate School of Business after receiving a GM fellowship in 1988.

Barra began her career with GM in 1980 as a General Motors Institute (Kettering University) co-op student in the Pontiac Motor Division. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering in 1985.

Barra is a member of the General Dynamics Board of Directors and serves on the Board of Directors of the Detroit Economic Club. She’s also a member of The Business Council and the Stanford University Board of Trustees, the Stanford Graduate School of Business Advisory Council and the Board of Trustees for the Detroit Country Day School.

Barra also enjoys raising money for good causes. In 2014, Barra and her husband chaired the Detroit International Wine Auction, raising a record $2.4 million for scholarships and community arts programs through the College for Creative Studies.

In 2012, they chaired the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute’s 30th annual dinner, which raised nearly $1.7 million for cancer research.

This year (2016), Forbes magazine named Barra the “World’s Most Powerful Woman in Business” and number five among the “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women.” She was also ranked first for the second consecutive year on Fortune magazine’s list of the “50 Most Powerful Women in Business” this year. In 2014, she was also added to Time magazine’s list of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World.”

What a bunch. One thing is for certain: these women are strong leaders and great managers. Did they do it on their own? Few of them did. Strategically getting were you want to go is the only way. Let us know if we can help you on your way up through our various services.
