PHD Epidemiology Public Health LOR

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is XXXX MD and I am writing this letter on behalf of my studentXXXX, who is applying to your distinguished PHD Program in Epidemiology at the University of XXXX. I could not recommend XXXX more highly and I am most certain that with her vast experience, prowess, energy and dedication, she will prove herself to be a great asset to your program. I am a Professor of Epidemiology, Medicine, and Pediatrics and I teach primarily in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of XXXX where XXXX is now finishing up her Master’s Degree and hope to begin your program at UXX next year. I first met XXXX during her first semester in our program. She came to me to talk about the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study (DPPOS), a national NIH project that I work on and serve on the writing group. We talked at length about the potential effects of metformin on cardiac protection and cancer prevention. Over the course of the next few months, we would continue to talk about our research, comparing notes, in particular, about metformin and ongoing studies of its potential to delay the onset of diabetes.

I also served as XXXX’s preceptor for her internship practicum in our diabetes program in Rwanda this past summer. I was struck by her high level of devotion to her work, her acumen with both patients and in the lab, which resulted in her immaculate and creative 9-page internship report that she sent me after her field experience was concluded. The document was entitled: “Exploring strategies of sustainability for the program of Life for a Child (LFAC) in Rwanda.” The proposals suggested by XXXX for the achievement of long-term sustainability for our program were especially impressive. We worked closely together for about 5 weeks, along with the other members of our team and Rwandan patients with Type 1 Diabetes. During this period we spent many hours talking not only about advances being made in diabetes research, but also in her area of greatest special interest, cardiovascular health, particularly with respect to epidemiology and pharmacology. This internship in Rwanda required XXXX to adapt to both an entirely new culture and a very primitive health care system virtually overnight, and to rapidly come to understand and respond successfully to numerous challenges involved with respect to both patients and providers. She also moved around the country to work in various cities and remote clinics, demonstrating independence, good clinical judgment, and superlative communication skills with both patients and the local team, further manifest in her poster presentation providing us with data, summary, and her sustainable proposals in graphic form.

XXXX is a very well trained doctor of medicine first and foremost, with an in- depth understanding of the challenges on our research frontiers in epidemiology and public health. Her excellence and creativity is virtually unsurpassed from my experience in the area of epidemiology and cardiovascular pharmacology. Thus, I could not recommend her more highly for admission to your Epidemiology program at UXX. I would be happy to provide any further information as to XXXX’s qualifications.

Sincerely,

Go Back
